Yana Schnitzler, Artistic Director

Yana Schnitzler, choreographer and dancer, grew up in Berlin, East Germany. She started studying ballet at the age of five and later delved into gymnastics and modern dance. A recepient of a four-year Tanzfabrik scholarship, Yana performed with the Company "Audio Ballerinas" in national and international dance and media art festivals, including: Kulturbro 2000 (Sweden), Dance Forum (Monaco), Tollwood Festival (Germany), BBC Music Live (England), Les Nuits Savoureuses (France), Straatfestival (Netherlands), Corporate events of Baccarat Jewelry (Paris), a three week engagement of BMW (Lisbon/Portugal), Lufthansa Airline at Expo 2000 (Germany), Mercedes Benz (Germany), Nokia (Italy) and Wella (Germany). She also organized and co-curated The Media Arts Festival‚ interActiva’ at the historic Babelsberg Film Studios.

After moving to New York, Yana danced with cilla_vee movement projects at Art Basel in Florida, the Grand Surreal Arts Gala at Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, and with The Movement at The Gates. In addition to performing she also furthered her studies, first at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, and later, with a two-year scholarship at the Mary Anthony Dance Studio.

In 2002 Yana founded human kinetics movement arts for which she currently serves as artistic director. Her work has been featured at various festivals, galleries, and museums in New York City, New Jersey and North Carolina, as well as on television (three 30-minute features on MNN). She received commissions and support from galleries Onishi & memoria, chashama, Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, and the German General Consulate of New York.

Yana recently directed a 70-minute documentary about dance studios in NYC titled Dance in New York (www.DanceinNY.org).
